Life Update

I haven't got much to post this week. I have been cleaning my house for two visitors that may or may not be coming over. I also recently shampooed the carpet of our bedroom. I used one of those home hero or super hero shampoo machines. The salesman was very honest. He said it wouldn't clean but it would freshen carpet. I have found it to do both adequately. It's not amazing but for new carpet it works well. It's helped with that doggy odour a lot and it did remove quite a lot of dirt and stains. Already I feel healthier and less asthma problems after one use.

I would like to try to use it more regularly but one thing outs me off. It's almost as tall as me (I'm 5ft). The handle is practically at nose level and there's no lowering it. It takes a lot of my small body strength to use it and I get a hand cramp trying to use the trigger. But for a cheap machine I won't complain any further. It does it's job so I'm fairly happy. Especially with the type of carpet that I have. We were awful disappointed at how easily it got dirty and stained. It was nice while it lasted and very fluffy but all in all, it was to much work and trouble to keep clean. It also got to flat to quick from the walking areas. That was the only real downside but not to worry. It's just a part of life. I am glad to be able to clean it enough to bring some life back into it.

I've also been a bit sick but I have two solid planned written ebook tutorials I'm working on along with a few ideas for animations and a webcomic I plan to continue after I complete my commission and animation ideas and learning. If I can learn enough about 2D animation I might convert some of my webcomics to animation. But that is a pretty big maybe at this point. The only reason I won't be doing this in 3D is simply because I don't have the PC power to do so nor the tools I would like to use. I would prefer to use 3DS Max or Maya, two programs I quit learning because of the hefty price tag. And Blender is fine and dandy but the way it keeps crashing and often corrupting an entire file is just not my cup of tea. So I quit 3D animation. Unless I can gather enough commissions I don't see me ever buying either program in the future at all. But that's an artists life. You just do what you gotta do and make do with what you have.

Toon Boom Harmony Gradient Tool

In Toon Boom Harmony, how do you edit gradients? The second icon on the tool bar if you click and hold, the last tool option is the edit gradient tool. To enable a gradient, you need to first create or edit a swatch and click Gradient to enable it and then choose if you want linear or elliptical. The above video, though fast, shows this. Please do use the option to slow down the video if it's too fast. The edit gradient tool is really great and works best on vector layers. It has resize, rotate and skew and is also very easy to move about. As far as I know, even the gradient can be animated but I have not tried to do so since I don't often use gradients in my animations other than for a colour overlay effect over the entire animation. I, like many others, looked for this tool with the painting options and became quite frustrated. It took some getting used to but once you know where this tool is, it makes editing your work a lot easier. The edit gradient tool also e...

Digital Painting

Pros: No waiting for things to dry No cleaning up. No mess. Exact colours and any colour always available. My pet peeve in traditional art was running out of black or white. No worry about too big or too small. Easy to resize canvas. Print out Take as long as needed without worrying about damaging what you're working. I mean this in the way that over painting paper can damage the paper. Quicker Relaxing to do on a laptop in a comfy chair or in bed Tablet is portable Me personally I can draw emotions better, my art is more alive but other artists are the opposite. Relaxing to draw in paint tool sai and enjoy many hours of drawing with full freedom. There's less restrictions than in traditional. No need to buy more supplies, it's a one time cost for the drawing program and tablet if you take good care of your tablet. Gets addictive because once you no longer feel restricted the ideas come pouring out. Cons: Can't do it without some form of computer C...

Ghosty Animation Process and Timelapse

Ghosty Process Timelapse from Draconian Rain on Vimeo . It's no secret that I love everything bright and flashy in my art and I have a terrible habit of making my paintings and animations too busy. Which you will see happening in the timelapse video above. My goal was simple enough: Animate a simple ghost in no more than 15 frames at 12fps on loop. For whatever reason I couldn't get Ping Ping loop to work and a few times I tried copy, paste reversed and that was ok, but in the end I used motion path and made sure the movement was fluid enough to not need ping pong looping. I had planned out to keep everything super simple. A basic background or blank background, a simple cartoon ghost. But I couldn't help myself, I had to make the inner body look magical and like it had spiritual energy. Then I had an idea. A while ago now, I watched a TVPaint video where someone created animated brush strokes by holding CTRL while drawing on a series of empty instances. And no ...
