Digital Painting- Selling Brushes

Just a few notes and random tid bits about my painting. Not a tutorial but a summary of a process.


Dry media brushes set to transfer, pressure sensitive opacity to sketch and paint. Colour picking using alt key to colour pick instead of "i" and then "b". Using the alt key is far quicker to colour pick and fantastic with the intuos express keys.

I'll update this post more as I complete more of the painting process.
Soft paint brush, lots of random oval and lumpy shapes. I used hard with 0% hardness for the lighting and touched it up with the dodge tool for the rocky looking scales. I'm slowly going into refinement on the womans face. My next goal is to make her less manly looking in the jaw.

There's a lot more to be added yet but so far so good. The clouds were the most fun. I used a lot of default brushes with minor edits made to them. Mainly just adding transfer to them.

Toon Boom Harmony Gradient Tool

In Toon Boom Harmony, how do you edit gradients? The second icon on the tool bar if you click and hold, the last tool option is the edit gradient tool. To enable a gradient, you need to first create or edit a swatch and click Gradient to enable it and then choose if you want linear or elliptical. The above video, though fast, shows this. Please do use the option to slow down the video if it's too fast. The edit gradient tool is really great and works best on vector layers. It has resize, rotate and skew and is also very easy to move about. As far as I know, even the gradient can be animated but I have not tried to do so since I don't often use gradients in my animations other than for a colour overlay effect over the entire animation. I, like many others, looked for this tool with the painting options and became quite frustrated. Digital Painting

Pros: No waiting for things to dry No cleaning up. No mess. Exact colours and any colour always available. My pet peeve in traditional art was running out of black or white. No worry about too big or too small. Easy to resize canvas. Print out Take as long as needed without worrying about damaging what you're working. I mean this in the way that over painting paper can damage the paper. Quicker Relaxing to do on a laptop in a comfy chair or in bed Tablet is portable Me personally I can draw emotions better, my art is more alive but other artists are the opposite. Relaxing to draw in paint tool sai and enjoy many hours of drawing with full freedom. There's less restrictions than in traditional. No need to buy more supplies, it's a one time cost for the drawing program and tablet if you take good care of your tablet. Gets addictive because once you no longer feel restricted the ideas come pouring out. Cons: Can't do it without some form of computer C

Ghosty Animation Process and Timelapse

Ghosty Process Timelapse from Draconian Rain on Vimeo . It's no secret that I love everything bright and flashy in my art and I have a terrible habit of making my paintings and animations too busy. Which you will see happening in the timelapse video above. My goal was simple enough: Animate a simple ghost in no more than 15 frames at 12fps on loop. For whatever reason I couldn't get Ping Ping loop to work and a few times I tried copy, paste reversed and that was ok, but in the end I used motion path and made sure the movement was fluid enough to not need ping pong looping.
